EFFECT OF WEEDING FREQUENCY ON TOMATO (Solanum lycopersicon L.) YIELD IN NORTHERN GUINEA SAVANNA OF NIGERIA

Abstract
A field experiment was carried out during the 2007 rainy season at the College of Agriculture, Zuru experimental Farm, to study the effect of weeding frequency on yield of tomato (Solanum lycopersicon L.) UC 82 B Variety. Treatments consisted of weedy-check (zero weeding), weed-free, two-weeding and three-weeding which were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) replicated three times. Results showed that that number of marketable and unmarketable, number of fruit per plant, weight of fruits per plant, fruit size (length and diameter), single fruit weight and tomato yield per plant and per hectare. Weed-free, two-weeding and three-weeding produced the highest value in all the yield components significantly differing from the weedy-check. The result suggested that two-weeding may be recommended for increased production of tomato variety UC 82 B.
