CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING OF SMALL – SCALE WIND TURBINE FOR MICRO- GRID POWER SUPPLY

Muhammad U. K, Umar S..

Abstract
Wind has been used for power generation and it is a clean, free and inexhaustible, renewable energy source available in the world. A small-scale wind turbine has been designed, constructed and tested using locally available materials at physics laboratory of Kebbi State University of Science and Technology Aliero, Nigeria. The wind powers available (W), extractable (W) by its swept area and electromotive force (EMF) output with respect to available wind speed at hub height were investigated. The three bladed wind turbines captured 15.64W in its 0.212m2 swept area out of 31.28W power available. Moreover, the wind turbine at 4.2m height was able to generate high average daily EMF of (7.41mV), while the wind speed was high at
6.22 m/s. Based on this result, the use of local materials could be encouraging to provide the basic electricity needed by the rural dwellers whose basic electricity requirement are lightning and phone charging.

Key words: Renewable energy, Wind turbine, Micro-grid power supply, Rural dwellers
